The Open and Distance Learning (ODL) mode of instructional delivery has enormous benefits that any organisation in the country would need to take full advantage of, the Director, Enugu Study Centre, National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Prof. Alexander Uche Onyia, has said.
He made this charge on Tuesday, August 29, 2023, when he took an advocacy campaign to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) at New Market in Enugu, Enugu State.
Onyia, accompanied by his senior staff at the centre, said the advocacy was part of the centre's continued drive to attract students' enrollment to the centre.
He took time to sensitise the personnel on the modus - operandi of NOUN, highlighting the great advantages of studying at the university, especially its flexibility, affordability, and timely completion of academic programmes, among others.
NOUN is the only institution licensed by the National Universities Commission (NUC) to offer single-mode Open and Distance education to learners in the West African sub-region. Onyia stated that ODL modes of Instructional delivery are driven by technology.
The director added that the easy availability of quality course materials enhances an individual's level of understanding via self-study, and if there are gray areas, such would be clarified during the facilitation exercise.
Onyia asserted that knowledge is power, and not only does it improve your day - to - day job but can also take you to the next level.
He therefore appealed to the Civil Defence Officers to see it as a matter of urgency by availing themselves of the opportunity NOUN has provided to upgrade academically.
At the event, the centre's Principal Assistant Registrar (PAR), Mr. Mathew Egede, explained to the audience the admission criteria, processes, and procedures for getting admission into the institution.
In his response, the Commandant, Enugu State Command, Mohammed Saleh Dada, expressed excitement about the enlightenment of the operations of NOUN, describing it establishment as a good initiative as well as one of the best things that have happened in Nigeria.
The university has succeeded in beefing up the number of literate people we have today, both in public and private organizations. It is education that can take you to the top of your life. Incidentally, at NOUN you can be working and at the same time studying, Dada stressed.
He reiterated the importance of academic upgrading and opined that holding a first degree qualification in Nigeria is like holding pure water.
Dada charged his men to package themselves well to improve academically.
Officers of the Civil Defense took turns asking questions, while the management of the centre provided corresponding answers.
