Abstract

ABSTRACT This study investigated the impact of a sedentary lifestyle on the prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) among adults in Odeda Local Government Area (LGA), Ogun State. As Nigeria undergoes an epidemiological transition, the shift from active agrarian lifestyles to sedentary occupations has increased the risk of chronic conditions. The study employed a descriptive cross-sectional survey design. A sample of 400 adults was selected using a multi-stage sampling technique across five political wards. Data were collected using an interviewer-administered questionnaire adapted from the WHO Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ), supplemented by physical measurements of Blood Pressure (BP) and Body Mass Index (BMI). Descriptive and inferential statistics (Chi-square) were used for data analysis at a 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed a high prevalence of sedentary behaviour, with 46.0% of respondents classified as having low physical activity and 77.0% sitting for four or more hours daily. Clinical measurements showed that 28.0% of participants were hypertensive and 21.0% were obese. Self-reported data showed a lower prevalence for Diabetes Mellitus (7.0%), heart-related diseases (4.5%), and hyperlipidemia (3.5%), suggesting significant under-diagnosis. Chi-square analysis showed a statistically significant relationship between sedentary levels and the prevalence of Hypertension (χ2=24.156, p
