The Resilient History of NOUN
The National Open University of Nigeria is the largest Open and Distance Learning (ODL) system in West Africa. Its creation was first envisioned in 1976 by the National Universities Commission (NUC) to address the unmet demand for university education. The university was officially established on July 22, 1983, by President Shehu Shagari's government.
Despite its promising start, the university was abruptly suspended on April 25, 1984. However, the critical need for an alternative, flexible path to higher education persisted. Recognizing this, the administration of President Olusegun Obasanjo resuscitated NOUN on October 1, 2002. Since its revival, the institution has become Nigeria's largest university by student population, proving its indispensable role in national development.
