The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has officially postponed its 31st Matriculation Ceremony from Wednesday, 9 September 2026, to Wednesday, 7 October 2026.

The university announced the change on 7 September 2026, following a memo from the Academic Registry.

According to the university, the postponement is intended to give newly admitted students additional time to complete their registration, clearance and other admission-related requirements before the matriculation ceremony.

New NOUN Matriculation Date

Students should take note of the following change:

Previous Date: Wednesday, 9 September 2026
New Date: Wednesday, 7 October 2026

Newly admitted students who had already made arrangements based on the former date should therefore adjust their plans accordingly.

Who Is Affected?

The announcement mainly affects newly admitted NOUN students who are expected to participate in the 31st Matriculation Ceremony.

It is particularly important for students who have not yet completed:

Admission clearance

Semester registration

Course registration

Required fee payments

Other documentation requested by their study centres

The additional time gives affected students an opportunity to resolve outstanding registration or clearance issues before the new matriculation date.

Orientation Activities May Also Be Rescheduled

NOUN has also directed Study Centre Directors to reschedule orientation activities in line with the new matriculation date.

New students should therefore stay in contact with their respective study centres for updated information regarding orientation programmes, matriculation arrangements and any centre-specific instructions.

Students should not assume that an orientation timetable previously issued for the September matriculation date will remain unchanged.

Important Advice for Newly Admitted Students

The postponement should not be taken as a reason to delay registration.

Students who still have outstanding registration or clearance requirements are advised to use the additional period to complete them as early as possible.

This is particularly important considering that NOUN has also announced that a Late Registration Fee will apply from the 2026_2 academic session once normal registration closes.

Students should therefore complete all necessary processes before the applicable registration deadline rather than waiting until the new matriculation date.

What Students Should Do Now

New students should:

Confirm that their admission has been properly processed.

Complete all required registration and clearance procedures.

Make necessary school and registration payments.

Confirm their matriculation status with their study centre where necessary.

Check for a revised orientation timetable.

Keep Wednesday, 7 October 2026 as the new matriculation date unless NOUN issues another official change.

NOUN Update Advice

Students who previously planned to travel or attend their study centres on 9 September 2026 specifically for matriculation should take note that the ceremony has now been moved.

Avoid relying on old flyers, screenshots or WhatsApp messages still carrying the former date.

Always confirm major academic dates through your study centre, official NOUN platforms or verified NOUN Update announcements.

NOUN Update will continue monitoring official information relating to matriculation, registration, TMAs, examinations, fees, portal changes and other academic activities that may affect students.

Please share this information with newly admitted NOUN students.
