The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) is working with the Commonwealth of Learning (COL) to develop an institutional framework for micro-credentials, paving the way for focused learning programmes aimed at improving employability and supporting lifelong learning.
The initiative was the focus of a four-day workshop held in Abuja from 5 to 8 October 2026, bringing together university management, academics, professional staff, National Universities Commission (NUC) representatives and COL specialists.
According to NOUN’s report published on 8 October, the engagement was designed to strengthen the university’s micro-credentials policy and prepare for pilot courses.
Micro-credentials recognise specific knowledge or skills acquired through focused learning and assessment. For students and working professionals, they could provide opportunities to develop additional competencies alongside existing qualifications.
Speaking through the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic, Professor Chiedu Mafiana, NOUN Vice-Chancellor Professor Uduma Oji Uduma said the initiative would help the university respond to emerging skills needs and expand access to flexible education.
COL’s Adviser on Higher Education, Professor Jane-Frances Agbu, explained that the workshop represented the first phase of the collaboration, with course development expected in the next phase.
The NUC representative, Dr Fumilayo Morebise, identified NOUN as one of the pilot institutions whose experience would help refine national guidelines before wider implementation.
The workshop also examined institutional readiness, including assessment integrity, employer recognition, digital certification, credit transfer, staff capacity and technical infrastructure.
For NOUN students and graduates, the development signals a possible additional route to professional skills. However, the announcement does not provide pilot course titles, admission requirements, fees, commencement dates or an application link.
Interested learners should await official course announcements and verify any registration or payment request through the university before committing funds.
