Carnegie Mellon University Africa has opened applications for its Certificate in Artificial Intelligence for Africa, offering qualified learners a cost-free online programme focused on developing AI applications.

Applications opened on 15 October and close on 15 November 2026, ahead of the next cohort’s scheduled start on 17 January 2027. The opportunity may interest NOUN students and graduates who already have the technical foundations needed for further AI training.

Admission is selective. Applicants must have introductory knowledge of linear algebra, probability and statistics, programming experience, access to a laptop or desktop computer with reliable internet, and at least five hours each week for lessons. Enrolment depends on the application and available places.

The six-course curriculum combines AI context with technical training in Python, mathematical foundations, machine learning and applied generative AI. Participants earn digital badges for individual courses and a verifiable certificate after completing all six. The programme does not carry university credit.

For NOUN learners, the practical appeal is the opportunity to build additional technical skills through online study. However, prospective applicants should assess their readiness carefully. Students whose experience is limited to using conversational AI tools should review their mathematics and programming background before applying.

Applicants are asked to provide their contact details, academic background, professional experience, CV and a brief statement of professional goals. Submissions should begin through the university’s official application page?.

A useful preparation step is to identify a problem the applicant wants to investigate using AI, then explain how the training relates to that goal. Examples might include analysing business records, improving access to learning resources or organising agricultural information. These are suggested starting points, rather than additional admissions requirements.

Applicants should also budget for their own connectivity and access to suitable equipment. They should not assume that free participation includes a laptop, data allowance or cash award.

To avoid fraudulent offers, follow the application link directly from CMU-Africa’s website and disregard intermediaries promising guaranteed admission. Keep a copy of the submitted application and confirmation. Programme enquiries can be directed to cmuafricacerts@andrew.cmu.edu.
