Conference Marking: Ogunleye Charges Examiners To Maintain Standards

The Coordinator of the South-East Conference Marking Zone of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Prof. Banikole O. Ogunleye, has charged the examiners to ensure standards and quality in the marking exercise, as the scripts represent human lives. 

The coordinator stated this on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, while briefing exam markers during the 2025_1 conference marking exercise in the South-East zone, Enugu State. 

Ogunleye, while admitting that marking is one of the difficult tasks in the teaching profession, also implored examiners to be careful, thorough, and meticulous for the benefit of the university and humanity. 

The Dean of the Faculty of Education emphasised that bulk scoring of marks is not allowed, but rather point-by-point awarding of exam scores. 

For the purpose of fairness, transparency, and accuracy in evaluating all scripts, Ogunleye told examiners to adhere strictly to the marking guidelines. 

He encouraged them to cooperate with both the subject officers and checkers, as the subject officers are duty-bound to vet marked scripts to ensure marking rules and regulations are followed. 

The coordinator equally added that checkers are to ensure the number of scripts given to examiners corresponds to what they are returning back, among others.

 

Earlier, Ogunleye had briefed the subject officers drawn from the nine (9) faculties of the university, charging them to demonstrate the capacity of employers by engaging qualified examiners in the marking exercise. 

He stated that the task was enormous as it needed to be approached with promptness, determination and sheer commitment, appealing to subject officers to do what is right. 

While encouraging the subject officers to handle or treat the markers friendly, the coordinator also said they must be firm, thorough in vetting scripts and disallowing bulk scoring of marks to promote standards. 

The Centre Director, Prof. Charity Akuadi Okonkwo, who warmly welcomed them,  expressed the centre's readiness for the exercise and promised to provide the necessary materials and assistance towards ensuring a hitch-free exercise. 

Andekin Ande represented the Directorate of Management Information System for technical support, while the Directorate of Exams and Assessment was represented by the duo of Adabayo Kayode and Mrs. Ndubuisi Juliana, for logistics.
