The National Open University of Nigeria has welcomed nearly 24,000 new students at its 31st Matriculation Ceremony, reaffirming its commitment to accessible, flexible and technology-driven university education.
The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has officially matriculated 23,885 newly admitted students into its various academic programmes, marking another significant milestone in the institution's mission to expand access to quality higher education across Nigeria.
The historic event, held on Wednesday, 7 October 2026, during the university's 31st Matriculation Ceremony, brought together students, university officials, parents and other stakeholders through a virtual platform connecting NOUN study centres nationwide.
Addressing the new students, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Uduma Oji Uduma, described Open and Distance Learning (ODL) as the future of higher education, stressing that the growing adoption of flexible learning systems by conventional universities confirms the relevance of NOUN's educational model.
According to the Vice-Chancellor, higher education is undergoing a major transformation, with increasing emphasis on accessibility, digital technology, independent learning and the flexibility to combine academic pursuits with employment and family responsibilities.

The university recorded admissions across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, reflecting its growing appeal to learners at different academic and professional stages.

ODL Is No Longer an Alternative but the Future - Vice-Chancellor
Professor Uduma observed that many conventional universities in Nigeria are increasingly establishing Distance Learning Centres and adopting dual-mode teaching systems that combine traditional classroom instruction with flexible and technology-supported learning.
He explained that this development represents a recognition of the educational model NOUN has championed for decades.
“NOUN did not wait for the future to arrive before preparing for it. NOUN saw tomorrow before many others saw it.”
The Vice-Chancellor maintained that NOUN's experience, nationwide study centre network and established learner-support systems place it in a strong position to lead the continued development of Open and Distance Learning in Nigeria.
He further noted that the increasing number of young Nigerians deliberately choosing NOUN indicates a shift in public perception.
Rather than viewing distance education as a second option, many students now recognise it as a practical and forward-looking pathway to acquiring university qualifications while pursuing personal and professional goals.
University Promises Improved Student Support and Learning Experience
Professor Uduma reassured the newly admitted students that the university remains committed to improving its academic and administrative support structures.
He highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen counselling services, information management, call-support systems and student welfare through the university's Student Affairs Deanery.
The Vice-Chancellor emphasised that students must take responsibility for their academic success by actively participating in facilitation sessions, completing their Tutor-Marked Assignments (TMAs), using the Learning Management System (LMS) and seeking assistance whenever they encounter difficulties.
He also encouraged students to develop critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, discipline and strong ethical values.
According to him, the purpose of university education extends beyond obtaining certificates; it should prepare individuals to contribute meaningfully to society and national development.
Registrar Administers Matriculation Oath
A major highlight of the ceremony was the administration of the matriculation oath by the university's Registrar, Mr Oladipo A. Ajayi, through the Zoom platform.
The Registrar formally inducted the students into the university community and reminded them of their responsibility to obey NOUN's rules and regulations.
He cautioned that violations of university regulations could attract disciplinary measures, including expulsion.
The ceremony officially marked the beginning of the students' academic journey as members of the National Open University of Nigeria.
