The National Universities Commission has commenced resource verification for proposed postgraduate programmes at the National Open University of Nigeria.
The exercise covers programmes in Migration Studies and Environmental Management and Control. It represents an important step in NOUN’s effort to expand its postgraduate offerings, but prospective students must understand that resource verification does not mean admission has opened.
The verification exercise began at NOUN’s headquarters in Abuja on Monday, 24 August 2026.
PROGRAMMES PRESENTED FOR VERIFICATION
According to the university’s official report, the proposed Migration Studies programmes are:
• Postgraduate Diploma in Migration Studies.
• Professional Master’s in Migration Studies.
• Master of Science in Migration Studies.
• Doctor of Philosophy in Migration Studies.
The proposed Environmental Management and Control programmes are:
• Postgraduate Diploma in Environmental Management and Control.
• Master of Science in Environmental Management and Control.
• Doctor of Philosophy in Environmental Management and Control.
The Migration Studies programmes were presented under NOUN’s Centre of Excellence in Migration and Global Studies.
WHAT IS RESOURCE VERIFICATION?
Resource verification is an assessment conducted before a proposed university programme is permitted to commence. The NUC team examines whether the institution has sufficient resources to deliver the programme according to the commission’s requirements.
Areas that may be assessed include:
• The number and qualifications of academic staff.
• Relevant physical and digital learning resources.
• Research facilities and equipment.
• Curriculum and programme structure.
• Library and information resources.
• Administrative and student-support capacity.
• Compliance with applicable academic standards.
The chairman of the verification team, Professor Yahaya Tayo Iyanda, explained that the exercise would help determine where NOUN had satisfied the requirements and where improvements might still be necessary.
HAS NUC APPROVED THE PROGRAMMES?
The official announcement describes them as proposed programmes undergoing resource verification. It does not state that final approval has been granted or that applications have opened.
This distinction is important. A verification visit is part of the regulatory process, but its commencement should not be advertised as confirmation that students can already apply.
Prospective applicants should wait for an official announcement confirming:
• Final approval of the programmes.
• The academic session in which they will commence.
• Admission requirements.
• Application opening and closing dates.
• Tuition and other applicable fees.
• The approved application portal.

WHY THE PROGRAMMES COULD BE VALUABLE
If they receive the necessary approval, the programmes could create flexible postgraduate study opportunities in fields connected to major Nigerian and global challenges.
Migration Studies may be relevant to people working in immigration and border administration, humanitarian organisations, refugee support, international relations, population research, public policy, labour mobility and diaspora affairs.
Environmental Management and Control may interest people working in environmental protection, climate and sustainability programmes, waste management, public health, agriculture, natural-resource management, consulting, regulatory agencies and community development.
These are examples of potentially relevant professional areas, not official admission qualifications. NOUN will need to publish the approved entry requirements before applicants can determine their eligibility.
WHY THIS MATTERS TO PROSPECTIVE NOUN STUDENTS
NOUN’s open and distance learning structure allows many working adults to pursue postgraduate education without abandoning their employment or relocating permanently.
New postgraduate programmes in specialised areas could therefore serve professionals who require flexible study arrangements. However, students must avoid making financial or career decisions before the programmes receive approval and NOUN publishes complete admission information.
WHAT INTERESTED APPLICANTS CAN DO NOW
Prospective students may begin organising common academic documents, but they should not pay for an unofficial application.
Documents commonly needed for postgraduate applications may include degree or postgraduate certificates, academic transcripts, NYSC documents where applicable, O’Level results, a passport photograph, identification documents, a curriculum vitae and evidence of relevant experience where required.
This is only a preparation list. It is not a confirmed list of requirements for the proposed programmes. Applicants should wait for NOUN to state the exact qualifications and documents required.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
After completing its assessment, the NUC verification team may identify areas where requirements have been met and areas requiring improvement. NOUN may then need to respond to recommendations before the programmes can commence.
