Ahead of the 25th Matriculation Ceremony of the National Open University of Nigeria, (NOUN), which took place on Friday, October 20, 2023, committee members of the Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU) participated in a student orientation exercise across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) study centres.
In a memo signed by Mr. Hillary Nwaki, the Secretary NOUN-ACTU, conveying the approval of the Vice-Chancellor, it mandated all the members to visit the study centres allocated to them in Abuja to brief students about the activities of the unit.
They visited centres such as the Abuja Model Study Centre, NSCDC Special Study Centre, Wuse II Study Centre, NPF Special Study Centre, NIS Special Study Centre, NCS Special Study Centre, and the NURTW Special Study Centre.
The delegation emphasised on the objectives of the unit for the university, which include the promotion of honesty, integrity, transparency, and accountability among staff and students alike.
Others were carrying out system studies to seal loopholes in study centres during examinations and encourage crusades against corruption and ethical misconduct during lecture delivery and examinations.
The new students were also informed about their core mandate which is to prevent crime and corruption, to dictate it as early as possible, and to give a response, allowing for a corrupt-free environment that is driven by highly sensitised, intelligent, and efficient staff for optimal performance.
The unit, according to them, creates awareness programmes in different forms to let people be aware of what corruption is and what makes up corruption.
Members of the committee charged the newly-admitted students to enter the university with a fresh mindset during the orientation and jettison any negative hearsay speeches as they will be experiencing direct learning opportunities made available for them.
Students were also urged to avoid other vices such as cultism, mark sorting, impersonation, and many others.
