Isulo Centre Students Embark On Health Outreach Exercise

Students of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Isulo Community Study Centre, who registered for the DES 303 course (Community Development) in the 2025_1 semester have embarked on a community health outreach programme.

The outreach took place at the Isulo Community Primary Health Care Centre, on Tuesday, July 22, 2025 in Anambra State.

Acting Centre Director, Dr. Georgina Ogbonna, said the exercise was part of the academic requirements without which graduation will be elusive.

Ogbonna added that the programme was designed to promote health awareness and to provide free medical check-ups and to give medication to the people of Isulo in line with demonstrating core values of community engagement and practical service learning.

The students, in collaboration with other healthcare professionals, exposed participants to health talks, blood pressure and blood sugar levels screening as well as malaria testing.

Other services included the distribution of anti- malaria drugs, paracetamol, Vitamin C, among others.

Our correspondent observed from available records that approximately 80% of the screened individuals were diagnosed with high blood pressure (hypertension) and several others also tested malaria positive.

Equally, it was gathered that many had never undergone such health screening before, indicating a lack of awareness and access to basic health services.
